Provener

Provener is a named hour observed inside the math. It is announced by the chimes of the great clock, and it coincides with the duty of winding that clock.

First noted context

Provener is mentioned during a conversation in the New Library between Fraa Orolo, an avout, and Artisan Flec, a visitor from extramuros. When the clock began chiming Provener, an avout excused himself to go wind the clock. The visitor expressed interest in seeing “Provener” and even recording it with a speelycaptor.

Observance and practice

• The great clock announces Provener with audible chimes.
• An avout responsible for timekeeping departs to wind the clock at this moment.
• Visitors may be allowed to witness Provener, but only from designated places and under guidance.

Discipline and access

In the same scene, Fraa Orolo permitted the visitor’s request to view Provener on the condition that he stand where instructed and obey the Discipline. He cautioned against activating devices without approval, invoking the authority of the Warden Regulant. Arrangements for where a visitor may go were deferred to the Ita.
