Suur Ala is first seen beneath the eave outside the Refectory kitchen, seated with Suur Tulia and cutting up old tires to make sandals while fraas work inside preparing food. The pair are absorbed in their own conversation and pay little heed to the spirited exchange in the kitchen.

• Within her cohort of fids, Ala is described as the self-appointed boss of the bell‑ringing team—and of anyone within range of her "searchlight" eyes.
• During a tightly packed lesson in Saunt Grod's chalk hall, she suggests moving to the larger Saunt Venster hall for more room.
