Decenarian Math

First Appearance and Context

Decenarian Math is presented within the Concent of Saunt Edhar as the home of the Tenner cohort. In the period leading into and through Apert, accounts describe the water‑driven opening of the Year and Decade mechanisms and visitors entering over a river bridge into the community’s precincts, with the Decade Gate operating on its ten‑year cycle.

Roles/Actions and Affiliations

  • Home of the Decenarians, maintaining a nominal strength of about three hundred.
  • Intake at Apert is planned to keep numbers steady (about forty new entrants), sourced from graduates of the Unarian Math and by Collection from extramuros, including abandoned newborns taken in from hospitals and shelters.
  • A labyrinth connects the Unarian and Decenarian communities; exceptionally promising One‑offs may pass early through it, though this is rare.
  • Around Apert, only a small portion of those who spend a year in the Unarian community go on to the Decenarian Math; many return extramuros.
  • Following Apert, the bells signal Eliger, when Tenners publicly choose and are bound to an order.

Relationships

  • Functional link to the Unarian community via the connecting labyrinth and the regular flow of graduates at Apert.
  • Neighbor relations with the Centenarian Math across a meadow divided by a high wall.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Part of a walled enclave set along a river bend. Across the river, three bastions in the outer works house gates for the Unarian, Decenarian, and Centenarian communities.
  • A stone bridge carries a driveshaft that turns gears to swing the gates’ doors; the drive is supplied by an upstream aqueduct and pond system. Drains from the pond feed canals and fountains that beautify the Primate’s compound and, farther downstream, form part of the barrier between the Unarian and Decenarian maths.
  • At Apert, the clockwork floods the Year and Decade systems; the Decade mechanism powers the opening of the Decenarian gate on its ten‑year rhythm.

Current Status/Location

During the decennial Apert, the community’s gate opens under clock control. Visitors from outside are admitted in limited fashion, and the math shifts from preparation toward intake and the imminent vows at Eliger.

Summary:

A walled mathic community within the Concent of Saunt Edhar, home to the Tenner cohort (the Decenarians). It houses the New Library and a towering clock central to daily timekeeping, and maintains tightly controlled contact with the outside world.
