Inquisition

First Appearance and Context

The Inquisition is invoked by avout during Apert when weighing whether customs—such as footwear used while going Extramuros—stretch the Cartasian Discipline. Later in the same opening period, two visitors were recognized as Inquisitors when the Primate entered the chancel; earlier that day the pair had toured incognito among visitors.

Roles/Actions and Affiliations

  • Enforcement and guidance: Avout treat the Inquisition as the authority that investigates and penalizes departures from the Discipline. An entry in The Dictionary notes that orders or concents that sanction additional liaison types contrary to the Discipline are subject to its action.
  • Branch and reporting: The Warden Regulant and her officers are technically a branch of the Inquisition. They report to the Primate, and the Inquisition can depose a Primate in specified circumstances.
  • Roving inspection: Inquisitors travel between concents to “poke around” and keep an eye on practice, aiming for consistent standards across the world’s concents so that the Reconstitution remains valid. Many roving Inquisitors are said to be promoted from experienced Wardens Regulant. They may move among the public without obvious insignia before revealing their role in the Mynster.

Relationships

  • Primate: Receives reports from the Inquisition; in defined cases the Inquisition has authority to depose the office‑holder.
  • Warden Regulant: The inward‑facing disciplinary office within a math; its officers are part of the Inquisition, and many Inquisitors are drawn from this role.
  • Avout and concents: Communities inside the walls adjust practice with the Inquisition in mind and may host visiting Inquisitors who observe and inquire during openings.
  • Reconstitution: The Inquisition’s oversight is cited as a means to maintain uniform practice so that the settlement after the Terrible Events remains in force.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Insignia and dress: Visiting Inquisitors have been seen in purple robes with distinctive hats during services, though they may travel incognito among visitors beforehand.
  • Reputation and process: Described by avout as a routinized, bureaucratized process rather than a lurid tribunal; its officers are familiar presences even when no specific case is afoot.

Current Status/Location

Active and visible during the present opening. At Saunt Edhar, two Inquisitors appeared during rites, and the Warden Regulant’s routine presence (with officers) continues even absent overt violations.

Summary:

An oversight body within the mathic world whose Inquisitors—and the Warden Regulant branch—enforce the Discipline and keep standards uniform across concents. It reports to the Primate and, in defined cases, can depose a Primate.
