Primate’s Compound

First Appearance and Context

The compound is introduced in accounts of rites within the Mynster, where a door in the Primate’s screen leads from the chancel into this restricted area. It is noted as a space reserved for the Primate and senior hierarchs inside the Concent.

• Private approach to the chancel for the Primate during formal observances; an aide may also use this access when officiating on his behalf.
• Working and lodging space for senior hierarchs, including the Warden Fendant and the Warden Regulant, who flank the Primate during observances.

• Location and access: adjoins the northwest corner of the Mynster; reached from the chancel through a doorway in the Primate’s screen. It is not a public nave and is restricted to hierarchs and invited guests.
• Grounds and waterworks: supplied by the concent’s elevated pond through throttled drains, feeding ponds, canals, and fountains that beautify the compound; farther downstream the same watercourse helps define the barrier between the Unarian and the Decenarian maths.

Current Status/Location

Active and restricted. The compound serves as a secure approach to the chancel for the Primate and as lodging for at least one hierarch (the Warden Regulant), within the Mynster’s northwest quarter of the concent.
