Saunt Bly

First Appearance and Context

Saunt Bly is cited during an Ordinal celebration of Provener, where the liturgy recounts episodes from mathic history. His story is presented as one of many traditional accounts retold during that rite.

Description and Role

Bly is remembered for originating developments in finite group theorics. Tradition holds that these developments led to his being "Thrown Back" by his supervising authority and that he then lived out his remaining days atop a butte, surrounded by slines who initially worshipped him. He reportedly convinced them to stop consuming blithe; after the change in diet they became surly, killed him, and consumed his liver, believing this to be the seat of his thought. Locally, the feature called Bly’s Butte commemorates him and is cited as a favorable observing site; he is identified as a Saunt Edhar man associated with the Concent of Saunt Edhar. His story is recorded in the Chronicle, and his relics are preserved at the concent.

Relationships and Functions

  • Warden Regulant: The account specifies that Bly was Thrown Back by his Warden Regulant.
  • Slines: Bly’s final years were spent among slines, who at first revered him, then turned on him after abandoning blithe.
