Hierarchs

Hierarchs are senior officials of the mathic world charged with enforcing the rules of life inside the maths, conducting inquiries, and overseeing major rites and procedures.

First noted context

A contemporaneous reference explains that, following notorious mishaps during a past opening, the Inquisition and the modern institution of hierarchs were established, including Wardens Regulant with authority to inspect and impose discipline across maths.

Structure and offices

  • The office of the Warden Regulant embodies the inward‑facing oversight of a concent, enforcing the Discipline and supervising Regulant staff.
  • The Warden Fendant provides the outward‑facing watch and security posture from the upper works, complementing the Regulant’s purview.

Authority and practices

  • Enforce the Discipline within a math, including inspections and the imposition of penance where warranted.
  • Conduct formal inquiries and interviews. Transcripts are taken in a specialized shorthand by trained staff, and hierarchs may retrieve and review leaves from niches as part of an inquiry.
  • Oversee or support formal rites held in the Mynster, including rare auts such as Anathem and Voco.
  • Maintain offices and courts within the Mynster; the Regulant’s court is used as a working space for staff and muster rooms during operations.
  • Hierarchs may dine among the avout, though they rarely do so in order to avoid letting extramuros information slip during conversation.

Recent activity at Saunt Edhar

At the Concent of Saunt Edhar, hierarchs have been visible in Regulant and Fendant roles. A senior hierarch conducted a formal inquiry with a younger hierarch recording in shorthand; they reviewed personal leaves taken from niches. Around the same period, the upper levels were cleared under command before a major aut, and access to rooftop instruments was restricted and later reconsidered.

Current status

Active and authoritative across the maths, hierarchs remain the principal custodians of the Discipline and the conduct of formal rites, working in coordination with the Inquisition and the concent’s wardens.
