Regulant Court

Regulant Court is an interior level of the Mynster at the Concent of Saunt Edhar, associated with the inward‑facing authority of the Warden Regulant. A parapeted inner walkway makes a full circuit of the court and is trafficked by lesser hierarchs on errands. Penance cells open directly onto this walkway through pointed Mathic arches; from such cells one can look across to the vault‑work of the upper chancel, though the parapet hides the floor far below where Provener is celebrated. On the outer side, a narrow window affords a view over the meadow and toward the long‑cycle gates; above, the Warden Fendant’s overhanging ledge limits the sky.

First Appearance and Context

The court is first encountered as the setting for a penance: an avout’s cell opens onto the inner walkway that circles the space. From here, the bells’ ropes can be seen moving during rites, and sound carries up from the chancel while activity in the meadow is visible through the cell’s window. During a formal summoning, the level may briefly empty as all avout are required below. It is later used as a thoroughfare when avout with permitted business ascend toward the upper works via the stair that rises from this level.

Roles/Actions and Affiliations

  • Domain of the Warden Regulant: Staff associated with the office circulate here and check on those assigned to penance. Cells in this level are used for copying, memorizing, and examination tasks set as Book penances.
  • Part of the Wardens’ courts: Stairs connect the Regulant Court to the level above, the Fendant Court, domain of the Warden Fendant; avout can move between these courts via the Tenners’ stair when permitted.
  • Before formal auts: Immediately prior to a Convocation the court has been observed crowded yet quiet as Regulant staff move between nearby offices in preparation.

Relationships

  • Office: Administered under the authority of the Warden Regulant.
  • Current holder: Suur Trestanas, observed moving between offices on this level and clarifying expected conduct during exceptional rites. See Suur Trestanas.
  • Counterpart: Complements the outward‑facing watch centered on the Warden Fendant above.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Architecture: Cells have no doors; instead, a pointed ogive arch opens directly to the inner walkway. A low half‑wall/parapet runs around the walkway’s edge.
  • Access and circulation: Access includes a small bridge controlled by a portcullis; the inner walkway leads round to a stair that continues upward toward the Fendant’s level, where the bronze of Amnectrus stands as a landmark above.
  • Facilities: Along the inner circuit are heavy‑doored muster rooms and adjoining storage lockers. These are used to brief and equip squads before a mission and contain stacks of sealed metal boxes.
  • Sightlines: From inside a cell, one can see across to the chancel’s upper vaults and, through the exterior window, over the meadow toward the gates; the Fendant’s ledge above blocks much of the sky.
  • Traffic: The inner circuit is active at most hours with lesser hierarchs on errands and with staff of the Regulant; before auts it can become notably congested but hushed.

Current Status/Location

Active and in use as the Warden Regulant’s court within the Mynster. Cells here are assigned for penance and checked by staff; access between this level and the court above is controlled by the hierarchs.
