Concent of Saunt Edhar
First Appearance and Context
A walled mathic community centered on the Mynster and its great clock. It is presented as the home ground of Decenarian avout and a focal point during Apert, when its clock‑coupled gates and waterworks regulate controlled contact with the extramuros via the Day Gate.
Roles and Functions
- Houses multiple maths and offices within its walls; avout life is structured around the bell schedule, communal meals, studies, and work details.
- Oversees formal rites including the aut of Voco, during which named avout depart the community under solemn observance.
- The Warden Regulant maintains inward‑facing discipline from an upper court within the Mynster and can restrict access to upperworks when required.
- The concent’s tradition and local practice are associated with the Edharian Order.
Description and Layout
- Site and walls: The concent lies within a river bend beneath rocky bluffs, with fortifications spanning both banks. A causeway leads to the Day Gate from the burgers’ square.
- Central tower and roofworks: The Praesidium anchors the clock and supports a rooftop starhenge. Access upward is controlled and, at times, the upper Praesidium is closed by portcullis so the rooftop remains off‑limits.
- Belfry and carillon: The bells are open to the weather. A carillon sits in the lower reaches of the chronochasm and is reached by a ladder from the Fendant court, ending in a maintenance shack just below the bells; this route does not continue to the roof. The clock’s automatic mechanism strikes the hours.
- Interior courts and halls: The Mynster encloses study spaces and courts, including the Regulant’s court; avout teams also wind the clock by hand on scheduled days.
Recent Activities and Status
- Following prior closures of rooftop access, the upper Praesidium has remained off‑limits while the belfry and maintenance route stay available for bell work.
- During a later rite, the aut of Voco was rung again and multiple names were called in a single summons. Sirens and engines were audible beyond the Day Gate as the assembly observed the departure.
