Hundreders

The Hundreders—also called the Centenarians—are a mathic cohort whose gate opens only once each century. At Saunt Edhar they maintain a distinct community and have a reserved approach to the south nave within the Mynster.

First Appearance and Context

Within the concent, the cohort is housed in the adjacent Centenarian Math, across a meadow and wall from the neighboring Decenarian Math. In shared rites, their processions and seats are associated with the south nave of the hall.

Roles, Actions, and Affiliations

  • Centennial opening: Their portal opens on a hundred‑year cycle. Avout note that a Tenner who joins the Hundreders during an opening would share the current one but almost certainly not live to see the next.
  • Voco participation: During Evocation rites in the Mynster, a choir of Hundreders sings while names are read, and members step out through their screen when called.
  • Discipline and access: Nighttime access to the rooftop instruments is regulated so that only one math uses the stair and roof at a time; arrangements are administered under hierarch authority and respect the privacy of each cohort’s screened space.
  • Comparative cohort: In discussions of cycle length and outlook, the Hundreders are frequently contrasted with the Thousanders.

Terminology and Historical Notes

  • Names and usage: “Centenarians” is a formal designation; “Hundreders” is common in speech. A single member may be called a "Hundreder" or a "Centenarian."
  • “To go Hundred”: A derogatory slang expression meaning to lose one’s reason; accounts link its origin to notorious mishaps surrounding a centennial opening and the subsequent empowerment of the Inquisition.

Current Status

Active within the Concent of Saunt Edhar. In a recent Evocation, Hundreders were among those called and directed to travel incognito, in small groups and without wearing the bolt or chord, to the Concent of Saunt Tredegarh, which was being organized as a convocation site.
