Day Gate

First Appearance and Context

The Day Gate is one of the named portals associated with the Mynster at the Concent of Saunt Edhar. Just inside the threshold lies the narthex of the north nave beneath the Great Orrery. Outside the gate, a man‑made pond with twin fountains stands at higher elevation; a straight causeway crosses the pond to link the burgers’ square with the gate.

Roles, Use, and Affiliations

  • Routine ingress: a controlled approach for visitors from extramuros during announced openings; the community supervises and routes arrivals through the north nave.
  • Ceremonial and disciplinary exits: used for departures during disciplinary auts and by avout who renounce their vows; it also functions as the egress during Voco when named individuals are called out.
  • Evocation logistics observed: in a later multi‑name Voco, those Evoked assembled in the north nave, received civilian clothing and basic supplies in the narthex just inside the gate, and were instructed to depart into the plaza in small groups—showing the gate can be opened outside its usual sunrise/sunset schedule.
  • Prior case: a Centenarian was escorted through the gate to an aerocraft waiting in the adjoining plaza.
  • Interface with authorities: at times, engines and sirens have been audible beyond the gate, underscoring its role as the boundary with town.

Relationships

  • Family of timed portals: functionally related to the Year Gate and Decade Gate, and to the rarer Centenarian Gate within the same clock‑coupled system.
  • Waterworks: the pond immediately outside the Day Gate feeds ornamental channels in ordinary times and supplies the hydraulic works that actuate the interval gates.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Approach: a straight causeway crosses the pond from the town square to the threshold, focusing foot traffic and gatherings during notable openings.
  • Setting: the gate opens onto a plaza outside the walls; inside, the north nave and narthex provide space to marshal arrivals or departures beneath the clock‑driven orrery.

Current Status/Location

Active and in regular use as the concent’s primary interface with town. In recent events it has been opened under hierarchs’ orders at unusual hours to facilitate Evocation departures; otherwise it follows the clock’s day‑night rhythm for routine admission and routing.
