Decenarians

First Appearance and Context

The Decenarians are the ten‑year cohort within a mathic community, sometimes called Tenners. They belong to the wider Concent and assemble in the Mynster; their cohort resides in the Decenarian Math.

Roles and Activities

  • Decennial cadence and Apert: The cohort follows a ten‑year rhythm and participates in rites and duties centered on timekeeping and communal worship. During Apert, limited contact with the extramuros is permitted under the Discipline.
  • Bell work and changes: Some Decenarians are shown maintaining the bells and practicing change patterns, passing those skills to younger suurs who will eventually replace them.
  • Chalk‑hall work: Following a widely discussed observation of an orbital visitor, word spread quickly within the Decenarian community and late‑night chalk‑hall sessions became frequent. Decenarians collaborated on praxic calculations and theoric questions related to pulse‑propulsion and observation geometry, sharing results among peers.

Relationships and Structure

  • Neighbor cohorts: The Centenarians occupy a more spacious south nave, while the Decenarians gather in the crowded southwest quarter of the Mynster.
  • Subgroups: Formal announcements reference a “New Circle” within the Decenarians; the text does not explain its exact role, but it is treated as an internal grouping.

Recent Observations

  • During a Voco conducted by the Sæcular Power, six names were read at once; among them were Decenarians: Fraa Jesry (Edharian chapter), Fraa Goradon (Edharian chapter), and Suur Ala (New Circle, Decenarians).
  • In an earlier rite, a Decenarian elder had been Evoked and subsequently Thrown Back, underscoring the cohort’s visibility in such proceedings.
  • In a later pre‑dawn Voco, seventeen names were read together, including multiple Tenners. Those Evoked were issued ordinary clothing and small kits, told to avoid wearing bolt and chord in the open, and directed to travel in small groups to the Concent of Saunt Tredegarh, identified as functioning as a Convox. Local extramuros groups attempted to arrange transport, including adherents of the Warden of Heaven.

Descriptions and Characteristics

  • Assembly space: Their corner is associated with side‑turrets and a narrow stair that reaches the gallery and bell‑ringers’ place, reflecting how the cohort’s numbers are accommodated at the edge of the central plan.

Current Status

Active in rites and daily work; based in the Decenarian Math and present at assemblies in the Mynster, with access and duties managed under established schedules and the Discipline. A number of members have recently been Evoked together and sent incognito toward an external gathering at the Concent of Saunt Tredegarh.

Summary:

A ten-year mathic cohort whose members—commonly called Tenners—reside in the Decenarian Math. They assemble in the Mynster’s southwest quarter and, during Apert, observe limited exchange; members may be formally Evoked through Voco to serve extramuros.
