Regulant Gargoyles

Regulant gargoyles are stone figures perched at the ends of the braces that support the Warden Fendant’s rooftop walkway encircling the Mynster’s central tower, within the Decenarian Math. They are described as keeping “eternal vigil.” Half of the ledge’s figures look outward (the Fendant gargoyles), while the Regulant gargoyles bend their scaly necks to look inward over the concent.

First Appearance and Context

They are introduced in the architectural description of the Mynster and its clockworks, where the tower’s upper levels carry the Fendant’s open walkway. There, dozens of close-spaced braces curve up and out from the walls; each brace ends in a gargoyle. The Regulant gargoyles are the inward-facing half of this paired arrangement, aiming their pointy ears and slitted eyes toward the precincts below.

Description and Placement

  • Material and style: carved stone gargoyles with stylized, scaly necks, pointy ears, and slitted eyes.
  • Placement: mounted as perches at the ends of the braces beneath the sentinels’ walkway at the roofline around the central tower.
  • Orientation: all Regulant gargoyles face inward, over the concent; their counterparts on the same ledge face outward.

Role and Associations

  • Association with the Warden Regulant: the braces carrying these figures shade the Mathic-arched windows of the Warden Regulant’s quarters below the walkway, underscoring the office’s inward watch.
  • Surveillance vantage: from the windows tucked between the braces beneath the walkway, few places in the concent cannot be overseen, a fact well known to avout.
  • Counterpart: paired with the outward-facing Fendant gargoyles on the same ledge (no formal page recorded yet).

Current Status

Fixed architectural features of the Mynster, prominently visible along the rooftop circuit and familiar landmarks to residents who know the inward-looking vantage points.

Summary:

A set of inward-facing gargoyle statues mounted along the sentinels’ walkway atop the Mynster’s roof. Paired with outward-facing Fendant gargoyles, they are associated with the Warden Regulant’s inward watch over the concent.
