The term is invoked in conversation among avout when noting that affiliation with one of these maths confers prestige (for example, a teacher at Baritoe being described as "at one of the Big Three"). It is also used to suggest that many important Sæculars spent a few years at Big Three maths in their youth before pursuing careers in the Sæculum.
