Hierarchs

Hierarchs are senior officials of the mathic world charged with enforcing rules of life inside the maths, conducting inquiries, and overseeing major rites and procedures. In their modern form they arose alongside a system of uniform oversight and include offices such as the Warden Regulant.

First Appearance and Context

References within the mathic community explain that, following well‑remembered mishaps during an earlier opening, the modern institution of hierarchs took shape with defined offices and procedures intended to keep practice uniform across concents.

Roles and Offices

  • Office structure includes the inward‑facing oversight of the Warden Regulant, complemented locally by outward watch and security roles.
  • Staff ranks include junior hierarchs who carry out instructions and logistics during formal rites.

Authority and Practices

  • Enforce the Discipline within maths and conduct formal inquiries with recorded proceedings.
  • Oversee and coordinate solemn rites, including the aut of Voco, in which named avout are formally called out for practical work.
  • Act on notices from outside authorities by issuing directives within the maths; an observed example was ordering the closure of every Starhenge, with compliance checked by roving officers.
  • Work in concert with the broader system of oversight, including the Inquisition, when inspections or enforcement beyond a single concent are required.

Recent Activity (Observed)

  • After widespread attention to an object in orbit and a large formal calling, orders were issued and enforced to keep starhenges closed; even as information circulated among avout, access was not reopened during this period.
  • In a later nocturnal Voco, many names were called at once. Hierarchs—robed in purple for the occasion—led the Evoked out through the Mynster toward the Day Gate. Junior hierarchs distributed civilian clothing, walking shoes, a small kit (including a money card and wristwatch), and travel guidance.
  • Those Evoked were directed to make their way in small groups, to keep bolt and chord concealed under open sky, and to rendezvous under cover before proceeding to an identified concent where a Convox was being convened. Local extramuros groups connected with arks were said to be organizing transport.

Descriptions and Characteristics

  • Formal dress for public rites includes purple robes. Junior hierarchs operate under senior direction during large rites and logistics‑heavy departures.

Current Status

Active across the maths. During the period described above, starhenges remained closed by order while hierarchs coordinated a large Voco and the egress of the Evoked under caution suited to unknown surveillance constraints.
