New Library

The New Library is a library building within the Decenarian math. It first comes into focus when Quin, an artisan from extramuros, is permitted inside to address a rotted rafter that had only recently been noticed ahead of Apert. During this visit, Fraa Orolo interviews the artisan while Fraa Erasmas serves as amanuensis.

Description and Use

• In contrast to the Old Library, it is a later construction; the Old Library’s stone floor is described as being some 2300 years older than the New Library’s.
• The interior includes high rafters that require scaffolding to reach. Extramuros workers erect scaffolding beneath a damaged rafter during the repair effort.
• Windows from the library look out toward the great clock, which dominates the math and can be seen from inside.
• Activity within the library follows the Cartasian Discipline and the math’s regulations; visitors are supervised and directed by the Ita.

Notable Moments

• An interview held here considers whether to “speel in” the hour of Provener. The artisan produces a speelycaptor and seeks permission to record, with arrangements to be coordinated through the Ita. During a later Regulant inquiry, Erasmas confirms his transcript of this interview, and the Ita subsequently refuse permission for Artisan Flec to operate the device from the Mynster’s north nave, so no speely is made from that vantage.
