Anathem

Overview

Anathem is the formal expulsion rite of the maths, the moment when an avout is Thrown Back from the Discipline into the Sæculum. It is recognized by its own bell‑change pattern and treated with great gravity—distinct from vow‑taking Eliger or the calling‑out Voco.

Preceding Context

Within the maths, different bell patterns herald different auts. On one occasion at Saunt Edhar, an unfamiliar change raised fears that the call was Anathem but the gathering proved instead to be Voco. Later, the aut of Anathem was in fact rung in the Mynster at the Concent of Saunt Edhar, expelling Fraa Orolo.

What Happens

Witnessed and reported elements include: the named avout emerges into the chancel; casts aside sphere, chord, and bolt; the community sings a wrathful anathematizing song; and the individual departs into the Sæculum. Those who remain reaffirm vows and rededicate themselves to the Discipline. The atmosphere is hushed and intense; a freely talking crowd is taken as evidence that the call is not Anathem.

Aftermath/Consequences

The person becomes Thrown Back, leaving the mathic community to live extramuros. In ordinary speech, avout sometimes speak of “risking Anathem” to warn that a transgression could merit expulsion. The rite’s severity and finality set it apart within the system of auts.
