Warden Fendant

The Warden Fendant is the outward-watching office of a math, responsible for maintaining sentinels and observation along the rooftop perimeter of the Mynster.

First Appearance and Context

The office is situated in an aerie constructed on the flat roof above the Mynster's vaulted ceilings. Around the central tower, the Praesidium, an open periphery walkway allows sentinels to pace a full circuit, with supporting braces below and twin themes of outward- and inward-facing oversight embodied in how the upper works are arranged.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Maintain an outward watch over the surrounding lands from the aerie and rooftop circuit.
  • Field and direct sentinels who patrol the perimeter.
  • Coordinate with the inward-facing authority of the Warden Regulant when situations require joint action.
  • Review external movements and risks and advise the math's leadership accordingly.
  • Clear and secure upper levels ahead of solemn services and large gatherings.
  • Control access to the upper works, including sealing the portcullis to the court and restricting the buttress stair when needed.

Training and Outlook

  • The office cultivates a habit of vigilance toward extramuros risks and ambiguous signals. Avout preparing for this work may be described informally as “Fendant‑in‑the‑making.”
  • Among “Fendant types,” cautious hypotheses are sometimes voiced about dangerous legacies from the Praxic Age persisting at heavily protected sites; such talk is presented as security‑minded conjecture rather than established doctrine.
  • Candidates and assistants may help with outward‑watch duties and incident review under the Warden Fendant’s supervision as part of learning the role.

Location and Access

  • Headquarters in the aerie above the vaulted roof; enclosed workrooms and stores stand around the inner court, while the outer edge forms the sentinels' walk.
  • The associated Fendant Court includes a reading room used by avout. From this level, a ladder route leads to a maintenance space just below the carillon; this path dead-ends there and does not permit higher ascent when the upper works are closed.
  • When security posture is raised, the court's portcullis may be kept locked down, leaving the upper Praesidium off limits while limited maintenance access to the bells remains available from below.

Relationships and Counterparts

  • Counterpart to the Warden Regulant; the two offices divide outward and inward oversight and coordinate during busy or sensitive periods.
  • During rites held in the Mynster, the Warden Fendant is seated to the Primate's left, mirroring the Regulant on the right.

Current Status

Active, with sentinels continuing their patrols on the rooftop circuit. At present the office is held by Fraa Delrakhones.

Summary:

An office within a math responsible for the outward watch from the Mynster's rooftop aerie; it directs sentinels and coordinates external security. It also controls access to the upper works, including closures of the portcullis and supervised routes from the Fendant court, such as the ladder approach to the carillon.
