Unarians

First Appearance and Context

The Unarians are first observed within the west nave of the Mynster during a daily aut of Provener, when a fifteen-voice choir in green robes leads portions of the rite. Their nave is noted for fine stained glass and stone-carving.

Roles/Actions and Affiliations

An order within the mathic world, the Unarians are described as the best-endowed of the maths and numerous enough to fill the west nave. Members wear green robes and at times lead the singing during Provener. The term One-Off is mentioned for rare cases of early graduation to a Decenarian cohort. Their resident community is the Unarian Math, which serves as a one-year point of entry for many and is a focus of tours and instruction during Apert. At Saunt Edhar they are visible in large numbers during Tenth Night of Apert; on one such occasion, roughly five hundred Unarians took part alongside visitors and Decenarians. In the formal handover of newcomers during Apert, a sickly foundling was kept in the Unarian Math so that physicians could more easily monitor her, while other children were routed to different cohorts according to age and condition.

  • Accessibility and progression: Unarians have an annual Apert, making them comparatively easy for Saecular interlocutors to reach. Individuals are described as sometimes moving from Unarian maths into longer-cycle cohorts such as Tenners and Hundreders.
  • Tenure and teaching: some Unarians remain within Unarian maths for decades, typically as teachers; by contrast, most who pass through a Unarian math spend only a few years before moving on to other cohorts or roles.
  • News curation: once each year during the annual opening, Unarians review summaries of Saecular news from the year just ended; once every ten years, just before Decennial Apert, they review the last ten annual summaries and compile a decennial summary that becomes part of the library deliveries.
  • Outreach and training beyond Edhar: at Baritoe—described as Procian-dominated—the Unarian math trains many young Saeculars who later go into law, politics, and commerce, reflecting close ties between that math and the Procians.

Relationships

Within the mathic community, the Unarians share ceremonial space in the Mynster with other maths and supply choirs for common rites. Their west nave stands opposite other groups’ naves within the same complex, and their community ties closely to the Unarian Math.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Vesture: green robes worn by choir members during rites.
  • Setting: fine stained glass and stone-carving in the west nave.

Current Status/Location

Active and visible during daily rites, occupying the west nave and, on an observed occasion, supplying a fifteen-voice choir in green robes. During periods of restricted access to the upper works, their cupola’s gridiron has been observed closed in step with other maths.
