Aut of Inbrase

Context and Purpose

Inbrase is a named aut (ritual service) observed by avout (monastic scholars) during a Convox (large mathic convocation). At the Concent of Saunt Tredegarh (walled monastic complex), it serves as the official induction of arriving peregrins—formally ending their Peregrin (sanctioned travel)—and re‑anchoring them in the mathic frame of mind.

Proceedings (as observed)

• Procession and setting: The aut is held in the chancel of the math’s Mynster (central clock complex), with the wider assembly arrayed behind screens in the surrounding naves.
• Rite elements: The program includes codified movements and responses, renewal of vows, and the dispatch of hand‑written notices to each participant’s home concent recording safe arrival.
• Symbolic contributions: Inductee contingents present short musical offerings (e.g., chant, polyphony, or computational chant) as their first, symbolic contribution to the Convox’s work.
• Acceptance: The full assembly concludes with a canticle accepting the new arrivals, after which the inductees exit into the math proper.

Participants and Organization

• Who participates: Peregrins from many maths arrive in named contingents or orders; senior hierarchs preside, including the Primate and Wardens.
• Frequency during the Convox: Because arrivals are staggered, Inbrase is convened repeatedly (reported as weekly) to induct successive groups.

Current Status

Active at Saunt Tredegarh during the present Convox, with large mixed contingents being inducted as they arrive.
