Peregrination

First appearance and context

The Peregrination is referenced in accounts of the ancient liturgy’s origins, noting that after the destruction of Orithena the surviving theors (disciplined scholars) “embarked on the Peregrination.” In that historical setting, an older aut (ritual service) fell from practice until later revivals within the maths (walled monastic communities).

Historical usage

“Peregrination” denotes a period of departure and wandering by the surviving scholarly community following the fall of Orithena. In this sense it marks a break in continuity, after which certain rites were only revived once life re‑consolidated within the maths.

Modern usage at a Convox

In current practice, during a Convox (rare mass convocation), “Peregrination” also names the temporary status of avout (monastic scholars) traveling as peregrins between concents and the host concent. Newly arrived peregrins are listed on a register and are expected to approach through the Day Gate and the visitors’ nave. Their Peregrination formally concludes at the Aut of Inbrase, when they are struck off the register of peregrins and enrolled into the Convox; documents are dispatched to their home maths recording arrival. Observers describe Inbrase being held regularly as additional contingents reach the host concent. See also Peregrin for the person/status term.

Relationships and functions

  • Historical cause and milieu: the flight of theors after Orithena’s destruction and the lapse of an older aut.
  • Convox procedure: the administrative and ritual transition at the Aut of Inbrase from “peregrin” status to full enrollment in the Convox.

Current status

  • Historical sense: a completed episode remembered in mathic histories.
  • Convox sense: an ongoing administrative/ritual status applied to arriving peregrins until their induction at Inbrase.
Summary:

Historically, "the Peregrination" denotes the migration of surviving theors after the destruction of Orithena. In current usage during a Convox, "Peregrination" also refers to a peregrin’s temporary travel status that ends at the Aut of Inbrase when they are enrolled into the assembly.
