Unarian Math

First Appearance and Context

During Apert, guided tours gather at the bridge to the Year Gate and cross into the heart of the Unarian Math. Near the approach stands a wedge-shaped slab of red granite listing fraas and suurs who fell in a one-hour sortie during the Third Sack; the tumulus is aimed inward toward the clock to emphasize that those commemorated returned. The Hylaean Way begins nearby and leads visitors through exhibit chambers.

Roles/Actions and Affiliations

  • One-year entry precinct: Serves as the initial home for new avout who take a one-year vow; only a portion continue on to the Decenarian Math, with rare early “one-off” passages through a connecting labyrinth.
  • Gate association: Associated with the Year Gate for annual movement and tours during the opening.
  • Intake and care during Apert: During Collection, may temporarily house foundlings when needed; a sickly infant was kept here so physicians could monitor her before transfer.
  • Part of the Concent of Saunt Edhar, sharing rites, mechanisms, and campus spaces with neighboring maths.

Relationships

  • Resident community for the Unarians.
  • Functional link to the Decenarian precinct via the connecting labyrinth and regular graduations during the opening.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Architecture and exhibits: The Hylaean Way’s entrance chamber is clad in greenish-brown shale rich with fossils; beyond lies a Rotunda lit by a triangular oculus, with celebrated statuary, followed by didactic galleries (including a Diorama Chamber) and an elliptical hall on the theoric golden age. The Way then leads past a stark stone-walled space symbolizing retreat to the maths and takes a lap around the Unarian Cloister before ending.
  • Memorial: A wedge-shaped granite tumulus within the precinct commemorates those who returned from the sortie; it faces the clock.
  • Setting and works: Bridges, waterworks, and a compact perimeter make this side easier to defend and also enable the drives and tours associated with the Year Gate.

Current Status/Location

Active within the concent, receiving visitors during Apert and preparing dormitories and grounds for the incoming one-year cohort as the opening draws to a close.
