Artisan

Artisan is a courtesy title used by Sæcular people for skilled craftspeople and tradespeople. It is placed before a personal name as a respectful form of address and is distinct from mathic honorifics such as Fraa (with women addressed as “suurs”).

First Appearance and Context

The title is heard during Apert at the Concent of Saunt Edhar when a visitor is addressed as Artisan Quin. It is also used for an extramuros craftworker admitted to the New Library to repair a rotted rafter, referred to as Artisan Flec.

Roles/Actions and Affiliations

  • Identifies Sæcular craftspeople who interact with the maths in practical capacities (e.g., carpentry and repairs).
  • Bearers of the title may be admitted under supervision for necessary work and directed to approved locations by the Ita.
  • The title denotes a practical trade or craft and is not itself a mathic order or office.

Relationships

  • Contrasted with mathic honorifics: avout use “Fraa” for men and “Suur” for women inside the maths, while “Artisan” is used for extramuros workers.
  • Examples include Artisan Quin and Artisan Flec, who speak with avout and, when permitted, work within the concent.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Capitalized and placed before a name (e.g., “Artisan Quin”).
  • Used by avout in polite address during brief contacts with visitors.

Current Status/Location

In current observance, the title is in active use around gate openings and necessary work inside the concent. Artisans remain part of the Sæcular world and appear within mathic walls only under specific, time‑limited circumstances.
