Overview

Vit is an alias used by Erasmas, an Avout traveling outside the walls under constrained conditions. Companions and allies also address him as “Raz,” a familiar form that surfaces in crowded public spaces. In the harbor city of Old Mahsht he is singled out as a “vout” by locals until avout from Ringing Vale (Math) intervene and help extract him.

Appearance and Traits

  • Not a separate persona so much as a cover name; he blends with travelers’ dress when possible.
  • After the Old Mahsht attack, he is described with multiple lacerations, a concussion, cracked ribs, and hand fractures; he is bandaged but mobile following field care.

Roles and Actions

  • Uses the alias to arrange clandestine over‑ice travel and later sea passage south. During the glacier crossing he improvises with bolt, chord, and sphere to survive a crevasse fall, rescue a fellow passenger, and reach the coast.
  • Aboard a coastal vessel, attends a Kelx ark service under the name “Vit,” relates an edited account of the glacier descent, and afterwards confirms to a fellow passenger that he is avout.
  • On arrival in Old Mahsht, waits in a public square and is suddenly attacked; muggers expose and seize his bolt, chord, and sphere. He briefly uses the sphere’s expansion to break free but is pursued as the crowd shouts “vout.”
  • A coordinated group of Valers arrives, shields him, and breaks the mob’s cohesion; he is then evacuated by friends in fetches to a riverside pull‑off where his wounds are cleaned and closed. His kit (bolt, chord, sphere) is not recovered.
  • Speaks with the Valers’ leader about recognizing an “emergence.” Declines a coach ride south with them in order to continue his present task; sends letters onward to friends and colleagues.
  • Later, while riding south in a fetch, watches a leaked speely that appears to show the Warden of Heaven taken aboard the alien craft and later cast back toward the capsule; he and a companion discuss what the footage might imply, while acknowledging uncertainties.

  • Cord: Sib and close ally; drives a fetch, helps stabilize him after the attack, and reacts strongly to his injuries.
  • Sammann: Ita companion who later plays the leaked speely and trades inferences with him about what it shows.
  • Yulassetar Crade: Extramuros guide who helps extract him from the square—calling him “Raz”—and assists with practical care and security.
  • Ganelial Crade (“Gnel”): Driver and fixer who coordinates vehicles during the extraction and assists with first aid.
  • Valers from Ringing Vale: A group of avout in red shirts who shield him, disperse the mob, and then accept transport south arranged by a magister.
  • Magister Sark: A Kelx cleric who later arranges a coach to carry the Valers away from Mahsht; he and companions converse with Sark while waiting.

Current Status

Injured but ambulatory and traveling south by fetch with companions. Continues using the alias while extramuros; lacks his bolt, chord, and sphere after the Mahsht incident. The Valers have departed separately by coach. He remains intent on completing his present errand rather than diverting with them.
