Clock

The clock is the great timekeeping mechanism housed within the Mynster, with four large dials mounted high on the walls of the Præsidium. Though “the clock” can mean the whole mechanism spread through the Mynster’s fabric, in common usage it refers to these four faces. Each dial, crafted in a different age, is driven by the same internal works that are mechanically coupled to the Starhenge atop the tower. Together they proclaim the hour, the day of the week, the month, the phase of the moon, the year, and other cosmographical information.

First Appearance and Context

The clock is described in connection with the central tower of the Mynster and its upper works, clarifying that some use the term to mean the entire mechanism while most mean the four dials fixed to the Præsidium.

Structure and Features

  • Four dials are set high on the Præsidium’s walls; each presents time and calendrical data in a different style reflecting the age in which it was made.
  • All four dials are driven by a single train of internal works that both drive, and are driven by, the rooftop Starhenge.
  • Beneath each dial lies a screened belfry set behind tracery.
  • The Præsidium narrows and changes plan as it rises: from square, to octagon, to a sixteen‑sided polygon, and finally to round. Its roof is a slightly domed disk (lens‑shaped) that supports the Starhenge.
  • Buttresses below the belfries steady the tower and spring onto four outlying towers; arches and webbed tracery link these structures, shaping the broader plan of the Mynster.

Relationships and Functions

  • Housed within the Mynster and anchored on the Præsidium; its rooftop mechanism is intertwined with the Starhenge.
  • Avout assigned to this duty wind the mechanism at Provener.
  • Lapses related to clock‑winding fall under the Discipline enforced by the Warden Regulant; the outward watch from the same rooftop level is kept by the Warden Fendant.

Current Status

Active and central to daily life within the Mynster, announcing time and calendar information for the community.

Summary:
