Fendant Court

First Appearance and Context

Fendant Court is one of the high interior courts of the Mynster at the Concent of Saunt Edhar, named for and associated with the Warden Fendant. It lies above the Regulant Court and on the approach toward the tower’s upper works.

Roles/Actions and Affiliations

  • Serves as the Warden Fendant’s level within the Mynster and a throughway between the inward‑facing court below and stairs toward the upper works.
  • Provides practical access to the bells: a ladder rises from the court to a maintenance shack just below the carillon in the lower reaches of the Chronochasm. This route dead‑ends beneath higher levels, allowing maintenance without implying an attempt to climb farther up the Præsidium.
  • Houses a small reading room used by avout for quiet study.
  • During periods when upper access is restricted (e.g., portcullises closed and the upper Præsidium off‑limits), movement to the maintenance shack via the ladder has been observed as permissible.

Descriptions/Characteristics

  • Balcony level with inner walkways and controlled gatework connecting from below; decorated with martial statuary and memorials. A prominent bronze depicts a past Warden Fendant kneeling behind a parapet with a long rifle; its pedestal doubles as his sarcophagus.
  • From the floor of the court, a ladder leads to a trapdoor opening into the sheltered machinery space beneath the bells, with weather‑exposed bells above.

Relationships

  • Direct association with the Warden Fendant and staff.
  • Vertical neighbor to the Regulant Court below and a local access point to the lower chronochasm.

Current Status/Location

Active and in routine use. Staff and avout move through the court, study in its reading room, and use the ladder route for bell maintenance when required.
