Lio

Lio is an avout (addressed as Fraa Lio) living within a Decenarian math. He is from the same cohort as Fraa Erasmas, with both Collected at a young age and trained in the community’s routines, including tending the great clock at Provener.

Appearance and Personality

Lio is stockier than his peers; chubby when younger, he has grown into a solid, powerful build. He keeps a closely shaven scalp and is often dusted with dirt from practical tasks. He is quick to initiate impromptu wrestling, giving him a reputation that others keep “in the corner of the eye.” His thinking can be idiosyncratic and intensely focused: he worries over terms from old vlor and questions about coordination and “strategy” even in ant behavior. He can also drop conversations abruptly when duty calls.

He favors an unconventional way of wearing his bolt on warm days—rolled and slung diagonally like a bedroll—which he devised himself, though others have not adopted it. He is sometimes seen hurrying to rites and only donning his scarlet robe at the last moment, searching out a preferred garment.

Duties and Activities

Lio and a small team are responsible for winding the math’s great clock at the appointed hour of Provener. During the aut he pushes one of four poles along with peers Jesry, Arsibalt, and Erasmas, coordinating their effort with the chant until the mechanism breaks free of static friction and the meteorite weight begins to rise.

After missing a winding duty, he was assigned penance by the Warden Regulant, working in the herb beds during the hottest part of the day. He is observed squatting on his sphere in the Cloister garden, absorbed in watching ants and debating whether their movements constitute “war” or mere scrambling.

Earlier, in late summer, Lio and Jesry were sent to walk the meadow looking for plants of the Eleven. When a burn of suspected blithe spread to surrounding grass, Lio proposed “fighting fire with fire,” invoking fire vlor to set counterfires. The tactic went awry, and Jesry dragged Lio to safety as their counterfires multiplied. The incident grew into a meadow fire that demanded bucket lines from the fraas and suurs; an inquisition later Chronicled it as an accident due to smoke-obscured observation, and the pair received penance.
