Lise

Lise is a Laterran woman from Laterre and the wife of Jules Verne Durand. She was identified as the woman recovered from a probe that descended at Orithena; she did not survive.

First appearance and context

  • First known to avout only as the deceased occupant of the Orithena probe. Jules later confirms that the woman was his wife, Lise. Images of her face circulated among participants in the Convox. Avout who handled the recovery prepared her body with respect.

Reported mission and death

  • Accounts from members of the visitors’ community aboard the Daban Urnud state that, following the handling of the Warden of Heaven’s body, a "blood for blood" gesture was planned: samples of their blood would be delivered to the surface. Signals interpreted as an analemma were taken to indicate Ecba as the destination. When Jules was reassigned, Lise went in his stead; according to that account, she was shot while boarding the probe.
  • Lise had learned about the avout and a few words of Orth from Jules.

Relationships and affiliations

  • Spouse: Jules Verne Durand, a Laterran linguist associated with the Daban Urnud.
  • Associations: Took part—by report—in a plan identified with the Fulcrum, an opposition movement among the visitors.

Related events and notes

  • According to Erasmas, Fraa Orolo "gave himself up for her," linking her fate to Orolo’s last known actions.
  • During a perilous ascent to orbit with Cell 317, Erasmas recalls her death—together with Fraa Orolo’s—as shaping his acceptance of risk.
