Arbrans

Not to be confused with Arbre.

Arbrans are the people of Arbre. The term "Arbran" functions both as a demonym and as an adjective (e.g., Arbran customs or Arbran years) and is used in-world when contrasting natives of Arbre with visiting peoples such as the Laterrans and Urnudans associated with the Geometers.

Context and usage

• In exchanges surrounding contact with the visitors, Arbrans are referred to collectively when comparing biology, timekeeping, and practice to those aboard the Daban Urnud.
• "Arbran years" appears as a unit in conversion work that compares local chronology to that reported by the visitors.

Recent observations

• During an entry into a pressurized dome on the Daban Urnud, Arbran travelers removed their suits and breathed the vessel’s air. Reports describe a sharp, immediate strain response (rapid heartbeat and urgent breathing) before they could proceed, suggesting that the ship’s atmosphere is difficult for Arbrans to tolerate for long.
• Earlier, the Warden of Heaven had been exposed to the visitors’ environment during a direct approach and did not survive; accounts leave the exact cause of death uncertain but treat breathing the alien air as hazardous to Arbrans.
• Arbran medical personnel have been observed working aboard the Daban Urnud alongside visiting doctors, treating returning travelers with supplemental oxygen from Arbre; in at least one case, medics unfamiliar with Arbran physiology initially maintained a patient under cooling and pressure until oxygen compatible with Arbre was supplied.
• An in‑world explanation attributes the difficulty to hemoglobin’s performance in unfamiliar gas mixtures; acclimatization can occur over a week or two as the body increases red blood cells, but immediate exposure still leaves most Arbrans short of breath and foggy without supplemental oxygen.
