Decagon (Elkhazg)

The Decagon at Elkhazg is a decagonal, open‑to‑the‑sky courtyard used for The Teglon, the long‑studied tiling and path challenge. It functions as a working surface where complete solutions can be laid, observed, and compared. Not to be confused with The Decagon at Orithena.

Description

  • Plan and surface: a flat, regular decagon paved with removable tile sets. The surface is slightly raised above surrounding paving.
  • Teglon tiles: multiple complete sets are kept on hand. One set consists of white porcelain tiles marked with black glazed lines; an older set is brown clay with molded grooves. The groove/line on each tile continues across adjacent tiles when a correct arrangement is achieved.
  • Layering: Beneath the current surface lie earlier complete solutions in different colors. Observers noted brown tiles above a green layer and, below that, terra‑cotta—indicating multiple historic solutions preserved in place.

Use and recent activity

  • Demonstration of mastery: After arrival of visiting avout, Fraa Jad completed a fresh, full Teglon tiling across the entire courtyard overnight using the white tile set. This solution was distinct from the earlier brown solution beneath it, showing independent completion rather than copying.
  • Stewardship: Magnath Foral, the Heritor of Elkhazg, identified this as the fourth full solution layered on the Decagon. Additional tiles can be fabricated to replenish sets as needed.

Relationships and significance

  • The Decagon is part of the tile‑rich complex of Elkhazg, historically associated with plane‑geometry tilings and the copying of geometric designs.
  • It serves as a public, durable space for working and displaying solutions to The Teglon, in keeping with Elkhazg’s long tradition of geometry.

Current status

  • Intact and in active use at Elkhazg, with at least four complete Teglon solutions preserved in layered form, the uppermost being the white‑tile solution demonstrated by Fraa Jad.
Summary:

An open-air decagonal courtyard within Elkhazg used for playing the Teglon. It is notable for layered full tiling solutions, including a new white‑tile solution completed overnight by Fraa Jad.
