Horse Archers

The Horse Archers are a steppe host known for fighting as mounted bowmen. In historical narratives they are named as the power that overran northern provinces beyond the Plains of Thrania and contested Bazian control.

First appearance and context

The term is invoked in accounts of the campaigning that culminates in the Battle of Trantae. In those histories, provinces north of the breadbasket plains had long since been lost to the Horse Archers. During a hard winter, their forces—led by the Sarthian clan—crossed the frozen River Chontus and established bridgeheads on the southern bank in preparation for spring operations.

Known history and actions

  • After crossing the ice, the steppe armies massed on the Thranian side of the river. When the campaigning season opened, three armies were ready to break out.
  • In response, General Oxas seized power from the Bazian Imperator and marched with the legions to drive the invaders back.
  • Near Trantae, the Horse Archers executed a false retreat that drew Oxas into a pincer and surrounded his forces.
  • In the aftermath, Baz was sacked; within months the city’s library and treasures burned as the fall of Baz was remembered.

Tactics and attributes

  • Primarily light cavalry: fast-moving mounted archers able to advance quickly, harry opponents, and avoid set-piece engagements.
  • Use of deception, notably feigned retreat to stretch and envelop heavier infantry formations.

Relationships

  • Leadership: named as led, at least in this campaign, by the Sarthian clan.
  • Adversaries: Bazian legions under General Oxas during the Trantae campaign.

Current status

Referenced as a historical power active during the Trantae campaign; no present-day organization or leadership is described in available sources.
