Warden Regulant

The Warden Regulant is an authority within the mathic community responsible for enforcing the Cartasian Discipline and assigning penances when rules are broken. She is cited by avout as the person who would be informed if procedures are not followed, especially when visitors and devices are involved inside the math.

First known mention and context

During preparations around Provener in the New Library, an extramuros artisan asked to record the chimes with a handheld device. Fraa Orolo warned that the Warden Regulant would hear of any breach and that she could impose penance, then arranged for the visitor to be shown a permitted place by the Ita.

The office is also named in connection with discipline inside the cloistered precincts when Suur Trestanas sentences Fraa Lio to hand‑weed the herb beds during the hottest part of the season after he neglects his turn on the clock‑winding team.

During a Provener service in the Mynster’s chancel, the office‑holder is seated among the hierarchs: Fraa Delrakhones, the Warden Fendant, to the Primate’s left, and Suur Trestanas, the Warden Regulant, to the Primate’s right.

Role and responsibilities (so far)

  • Oversees adherence to the Discipline within the math, including supervision of how visitors are handled and whether devices may be used.
  • Has authority to impose penance for violations.
  • Administers internal discipline for lapses in communal duties (e.g., failure to perform assigned clock‑winding), with penances that may include labor such as weeding.
  • Maintains a duty watch staffed by deputies; those on duty may testify during inquisitions, and their reports can determine how incidents are entered in the Chronicle and what penance is assigned.
  • Liturgical accounts attribute to the office the power to “Throw Back” an avout, indicating capacity to order severe sanctions when violations are grave.
  • Distinct from logistical coordinators such as the Ita, who direct visitors where to stand or work.

Appointment and succession

  • When a prior holder retired (an aut of Regred), the Primate named Suur Trestanas as the new Warden Regulant.
  • Upon her appointment, she moved into the Primate’s Compound and took meals with the other hierarchs.

Seat and outlook

The office is physically associated with inward‑facing windows set into the upperworks of the Mynster, tucked beneath the sentinels’ perimeter walkway of the Warden Fendant’s aerie. These are squat Mathic arches fitted between the braces that support the walk; the ends of those braces perch gargoyles—half outward‑looking “Fendant,” half inward‑gazing Regulant Gargoyles. From these windows few places in the concent cannot be observed.

Traits and details

  • The office is not gender‑specific: a previous holder is referred to as male; the current holder is Suur Trestanas.
  • A prior Warden Regulant was remembered by avout as reasonable and wise despite meting out penance.

Perception and rumor

Some avout periodically assert that the hierarchs have listening devices salted around the concent; belief in such surveillance waxes and wanes and was said to be on the rise following Suur Trestanas’s appointment. This is presented as rumor among avout, not established fact.

Current status

Active as a disciplinary authority within the math; referenced in contexts involving both visitor access/device use and the correction of lapses in communal duties.

Summary:

An authority within the mathic community who enforces the Discipline and assigns penance; the office is also tied to an inward-facing watch from high windows beneath the rooftop aerie, complementing the Warden Fendant’s outward watch.
